Dessert Without Deprivation: The Mediterranean Approach
Let’s explore how desserts can fit seamlessly into your Mediterranean lifestyle, along with tips for making healthier choices.
How can it be the middle of December? A friend recently sent me a beautiful article she wrote about finding joy amidst the busyness of the season. And as we all know, that’s not always easy to do.
In her article, she shared Don’t Hesitate, a lovely poem by Mary Oliver that encourages us to embrace those sudden, unexpected moments of joy. For me, joy might look like catching a breathtaking sunrise, waking up to the smell of freshly brewed coffee (thank you, Keith!), or feeling that crisp, cool air on my face during a morning walk. Whatever it may be, these moments are gifts—ones we’re meant to savor, not brush aside. As the poem so beautifully says, “Joy is not meant to be a crumb.”
Now, you might be wondering, “Pam, what does this have to do with the Mediterranean diet and dessert?” Well, this time of year, as we gather around the table with family and friends, dessert often plays a sweet role in our celebrations. And the Mediterranean perspective reminds us to embrace the pleasure of both food and company.
